Rwanda’s distinctive altitude, rainfall patterns, volcanic and fertile soils uniquely-suite the coffee growing conditions for rich, aromatic and naturally flavorful coffee. Recognizing significant potential demand for Rwandan coffee, we have had special coffee buyer visits in Rwanda and have at the same time participated in different coffee exhibitions, conferences and many different coffee programs with the aim of having this coffee excel as it should. This has been within the country, regionally and allover the world.
Rwandan coffee has further gained international reputation and a "prestigious profile as well. This has been through the coffee sales increase which is giving a greater value to the coffee farmers in big price increases from big coffee roasters, wholesalers, retailers and owners of very big coffee shops around the world.
Coffee farming is deeply rooted in Rwanda tradition. Since the introduction of coffee at the beginning of the 20th century, Rwanda farmers realized that the crop matched our agro-ecological environment. Through coffee farming Rwanda created wealth consisting of digging a whole in the ground and planting a coffee seedling. The crop would grow with maximum care consisting of weeding and mulching. The Government has also expressed its commitment to improving coffee primary processing infrastructure, through assistance in securing funds for setting up new coffee washing stations, provision of pesticides, fertlisers and seedlings.
Primary processing of Rwanda coffee is carried out by individual farmers using the wet process method in coffee washing stations. In many areas, farmers are grouped in cooperatives to set up coffee washing stations so that they can improve quality by producing fully washed coffee.
Rwanda has been hosting several international coffee events which were contributing to creating its strong profile because of its quality being exposed to the international world. These events include the East African Fine Coffees Association (EAFCA) that was hosted in February 2009 which included a coffee safari to the coffee growing regions, the 1st African Cup of Excellency that took place in 2009 and the Golden Cup that took place in 2007.
